The quarter map

Six questions.
Thirteen weeks.
One index.

More from Milk runs from the week of 7 September to the week of 30 November, with the More from Milk Index following in December. Six pillar weeks form the spine. Each opens with a signal any reader in the sector recognises, and closes with the commercial decision it forces. The analysis runs in between.

The thirteen weeks

Six questions across thirteen weeks, the Index in December, and what each pillar week asks.

Between pillar weeks, signals content runs weekly: retail and shopper movement, dairy and cheese markets, manufacturing pressure.

Two long-form pieces publish between the pillars: the value-capture piece in the week of 12 October and The New Dairy Shelf in the week of 26 October.

How every pillar week runs

Each opens with a signal any reader in the sector recognises, and closes with the commercial decision it forces. The analysis runs in between.

What each pillar week asks

In calendar order, which is set by audience urgency and selling window, not pillar number.

Pillar One

Week of 7 September

Published

What is a litre worth once it leaves the farm, and who decides?

Two processing routes out of a British dairy carry a published value. The route the protein demand points at has no comparable published UK route indicator, and the week asked what that does inside a boardroom comparing the three.

Pillar Five

Week of 21 September

When does a waste stream become a revenue stream?

Year-two extended producer responsibility fees fall due in November. The week works the packaging arithmetic in public, line by line, and asks which waste streams are already paying processors back.

Pillar Two

Week of 5 October

Britain has the whey. Does it have the plant?

Conversion capacity. The approximately £988 million Saputo UK acquisition is the live case, and the week asks what a pound of milk is worth at each rung of the value ladder, and who holds the plant to climb it.

Pillar Three

Week of 19 October

Where has dairy lost its place at the table?

Repositioning. A product that was already on the shelf outgrew the category leader without a technical change, and the week asks whether that is repeatable by design.

Pillar Four

Week of 2 November

Did dairy remove the component consumers now value most?

The full-fat question, with the premise contested on the page rather than assumed. Where the till data cuts against the argument, the week says so.

Pillar Six

Week of 16 November

What happens to the word dairy when milk proteins no longer need a cow?

The regulatory record, read for the people who will have to answer to it.

UK and Ireland

Threaded through the quarter, gathered week of 30 November

Ireland runs the same milk into a different configuration.

The comparison week sets out what the quarter proved on each island.

The Index

December

More from Milk Index 2027

Growth territories scored against the eight criteria declared at the outset, before a single piece of evidence was gathered.

Partnerships

Partners in any pillar are visible across the quarter, not only in their week. Pillar delivery dates are above; the strongest windows close early. Pillar Two and Pillar Five conversations opened on 14 September.
