Executive summary
The UK dairy market is approaching a demographic inflection point. Population ageing is no longer a distant social forecast: it is changing household structure, nutritional priorities, shopping missions and the economics of food formats. The strongest growth opportunity is therefore not a product labelled for “older people”. It is a portfolio of products and services designed around longer lives.
| Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|
| 69.5m | UK population, mid-2025 |
| +29.4% | Cottage cheese volume, 52 weeks to March 2025 |
| +34.7% | Kefir volume, same period |
| +0.5% | Total cows’ dairy volume, 12 weeks to July 2026 |
The industry has spent much of the past decade looking at disruption through the lenses of plant-based alternatives, digital commerce, protein, convenience and younger consumers. Each matters. Demography, however, changes the size and composition of the market itself. The UK population reached an estimated 69.5 million in mid-2025. The number of people aged 90 or over reached 625,000 in 2024, 53.7% higher than in 2004. In 2025, 8.6 million people lived alone and almost half were aged 65 or over. These shifts alter not only demand for nutrition but also pack size, resealability, waste tolerance, legibility and the importance of simple preparation. [E1–E4]
The commercial case rests on six linked needs. Consumers want to preserve muscle, remain mobile, manage metabolic health, support digestive wellbeing, secure more nutrition from smaller portions and continue to enjoy food. Dairy can serve all six, but no single category wins automatically. Its advantages depend on formulation, evidence, price, format and communication.
